It’s a much more organic way to create the visage with which you will face the wasteland, though it lacks the precision of the “slider” approach. Character creation takes place in front of a bathroom mirror, with your spouse commenting on your face as you mold it like virtual clay. Getting a glimpse of a long-gone era sets the stage for a dramatic presentation of the world after the apocalypse. The world is crisp and clean and immediately arresting. The game and its overall experience begin in parallel. Worse, the elimination and/or streamlining of various game systems make Fallout 4 feel shallower than its predecessors.
Fallout 4 doesn’t break that trend, for better or for worse, but it does feel like the formula is starting to wear thin, and the legacy issues of games past feel all the more detrimental to the experience this time. Bethesda has a reputation for building hugely expansive but flawed and unpolished game experiences.
